Our Best Practice Schools

Our 13 Language First Best Practice Schools spread across the 4 Local Authorities, have all received first-hand training from University of Oxford and development by specialist language coaches to firmly embed the Language First Principles. These schools are committed to sharing Language First in action, in their schools and settings, with specialisms in: EAL, SEND; outdoor learning; parental engagement; Makaton; adult-child interaction and language-rich learning environments.

These schools open their doors to neighbouring settings as part of the project offer, and host learning walks and modelled sessions.

Many of these schools have enjoyed success and improved outcomes beyond EYFS, by extending the principles into Key Stage 1 and 2.

Ryders Hayes and Manor School are also host schools for Voice Black Country working with School21, Stratford, London to raise the profile of Oracy across school.

Parent Champions

parent championsWe have established Early Years’ Language First Parent Champions in each school. Parent Champions promote and share excellent levels of adult-child interaction, modelling to other parents and supporting families with language-learning at home and whilst out and about together.

These parents will have attended the Language First Parent Workshop sessions run by our Best Practice Schools and have access to on-going training.

Parent champions receive further Language First training and parent resources.
