Vision

To empower every child to become a confident, articulate communicator and an avid, lifelong reader and writer—equipping them with the voice to share their ideas, the empathy to understand others, and the literacy skills to unlock future possibilities.

Curriculum Drivers

  • Possibilities: Through our English curriculum, pupils explore possibilities by immersing themselves in rich, diverse literature that expands their worldview, exposes them to new perspectives, and ignites their imagination.

  • Independence: Pupils write and speak with increasing independence, drawing on a deep reservoir of vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, and mentor texts to express their unique voice and ideas.

  • Resilience: Pupils build lasting resilience by developing the stamina for deep reading, embracing the editing and drafting process as a natural part of writing, and viewing mistakes as opportunities to refine their communication.

Intent

  • Mastery of Core Literacy Skills: Develop secure, progressive foundations in reading fluency, comprehension, grammar, composition, and spoken language across all key stages.

  • Cultural & Textual Literacy: Expose pupils to a diverse spectrum of high-quality texts—including classic literature, contemporary fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and works from varied cultures and perspectives.

  • Authentic Voice & Expressive Autonomy: Empower pupils to make purposeful choices in their writing and speech, selecting vocabulary and structure to suit audience and purpose rather than relying on formulaic frames.

Implementation

  • Text-Rich Learning Journey: Anchor reading and writing in high-quality mentor texts, using rich literature as the springboards for vocabulary acquisition, sentence drafting, and thematic discussion.

  • The Writing Process: Emphasize the iterative journey of writing—gathering ideas, modelling, drafting, editing, and polishing—to normalise reflection and continuous refinement.

  • Oracy & Vocabulary Instruction: Explicitly teach subject-specific and high-utility Tier 2/3 vocabulary, embedding structured talk and debate so pupils can articulate their thoughts clearly and respectfully.

Intended Impact

By the time children leave Ryders Hayes primary school, they see themselves as capable, reflective readers and writers who possess the vocabulary to express their thoughts, the critical stamina to engage with complex texts, and the communicative confidence to navigate the wider world.
