Reception

In Reception we continue the focus on the children learning in an interactive and motivating environment. As they progress through the Early Years Foundation Stage, more emphasis is given to formal learning. We believe young children learn best when they are actively involved, and we provide stimulating surroundings to engage their interest; encouraging talk and language development through stories, rhymes, songs, talk and role-play inside or in the outdoor areas.

In Reception the team aim to meet the needs and interests of the children in order for them to achieve to the best of their abilities. One of the most popular topics is Space. This year Reception children have been immersed in a Space topic. Children have discovered the names of all the planets; had the opportunity to use telescopes in order to try and find the moon, eaten like astronauts using plastic bags and straws and much more. Following on from this children watched the John Lewis advert ' the man on the moon' and decided to send him a letter. They used helium balloons to send the letter and were lucky enough for him to come and visit them in school. Children were in awe and had lots of questions for him such as 'How did you get here?' 'What do you want for Christmas?' and 'What is your favourite colour?' The topic, as a whole, has helped to develop children's communication and language skills with them asking questions, answering questions and creating storylines and narratives in their play.

“The groundwork for this success starts in the excellent early years. The youngest children show a keenness to learn, cooperate and talk that is impressive. Everyone is a ‘word collector’ and a ‘magnet for conversation’. Songs and stories; rhythms and rhyme form the bedrock of the daily offer. This builds into effective phonics teaching as children move up through the years. Teachers give extra support if and when needed.".
