History

Vision:

To inspire every child to become a curious, knowledgeable and confident young historian by asking thoughtful questions, investigating evidence and developing a deeper understanding of the people, places and events that have shaped our world.

Curriculum Drivers:

Through our History curriculum, pupils explore possibilities by asking questions, investigating different periods and exploring a range of historical sources and perspectives. They create possibilities by using their growing knowledge and evidence to form interpretations, make connections and communicate their understanding in different ways. They build independence and resilience by developing their own historical enquiries, evaluating evidence, challenging their thinking and revisiting ideas when new evidence changes their understanding.

Intent:
  • Historical Chronology: Develop a secure understanding of historical periods, sequence and the changes that have taken place over time.

  • Historical Concepts: Develop understanding of key historical concepts, making connections between people, events, periods and changes.

  • Historical Investigation & Interpretation: Ask questions, investigate historical evidence and develop informed interpretations of the past.

  • Historical Communication: Communicate historical knowledge and understanding clearly, using appropriate vocabulary and evidence.

Implementation:
  • Chronological Progression: Build knowledge progressively across the key stages, revisiting and deepening understanding of historical periods, concepts and connections.

  • Enquiry: Provide opportunities for pupils to ask questions, investigate a range of sources, consider different perspectives and develop their own interpretations of the past.

  • Vocabulary: Explicitly teach and revisit historical vocabulary, enabling pupils to confidently discuss, explain and communicate their historical understanding.

Intended Impact:

By the time children leave primary school, they see themselves as capable and curious historians, with a secure knowledge of the past, the confidence to question and interpret evidence, and the skills to understand how history has shaped the world they live in today.
