At Ryders Hayes we aim to inspire every child to think like an artist: experimenting without fear, expressing unique ideas, and discovering the world through creative curiosity.

Through our Art & Design curriculum, pupils explore possibilities by experimenting with diverse materials and contemporary artists, create with increasing independence by using sketchbooks to drive their own artistic decisions, and build lasting resilience by testing, adapting, and refining their work through creative challenges.

Intent:

• Mastery of Core Skills: Build progressive confidence in foundational techniques - drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking ,using varied mediums and tools.

• Cultural Literacy: Expose children to a diverse spectrum of diverse historical and contemporary artists, craftspeople, and designers from varied cultures and backgrounds.

• Creative Autonomy: Encourage pupils to make independent choices about tools, composition, and self-expression rather than copying a fixed outcome.

 

Implementation:

• Sketchbook-Centered Learning: Use sketchbooks across all key stages as safe spaces for gathering ideas, experimenting with techniques, and developing personal reflection.

• Process Over Product: Prioritise the creative journey, inquiry, and refinement over producing identical, display-ready pieces.

• Informed Dialogue: Teach specific artistic vocabulary so pupils can articulate their choices, evaluate their work, and discuss artwork constructively.

 

Intended Impact:

By the time children leave primary school, they see themselves as capable artists with the technical confidence to express their thoughts, the resilience to learn from mistakes, and a lifelong appreciation for visual arts.
