Modern Foreign Languages
Vision
We want to open the mind of Ryders Hayes children to a wider world through language. We want to inspire children to feel excited about learning new languages. By discovering foreign languages, pupils develop a curiosity about the world around them, build empathy for different cultures, and grow into confident global citizens.

Curriculum Drivers
Our Spanish and modern languages curriculum is built on three simple actions:
-
Explore: We look at how different languages connect through history, culture, and traditions.
-
Develop: We give children regular opportunities to speak, listen to, and use Spanish in real-life, everyday situations.
-
Link: We explore where words come from and how they work, helping children build strong vocabulary across all subjects.

Intent (What We Aim to Achieve)
We aim to nurture four key learning habits in every child through our language lessons:
-
Resourceful: Children use new vocabulary confidently in creative activities and feel comfortable asking questions to learn more.
-
Resilient: Pupils learn that making mistakes is a natural part of learning a new language—and they bounce back with confidence!
-
Reciprocal: Children work together, listening carefully to one another and sharing their ideas out loud.
-
Reflective: Pupils make connections between Spanish, English, and other subjects to deepen their overall understanding.

Implementation (How We Teach)
Language learning in our school is interactive, lively, and hands-on:
-
Purposeful Play & Practice: Children learn Spanish through practical activities, roleplay, songs, and games that make vocabulary stick.
-
Culture & History: Lessons combine speaking and listening practice with stories, traditions, and historical contexts from Spanish-speaking countries.
-
Building Connections: We actively show children how words relate to one another, boosting their grammar and reading skills in both Spanish and English.

Intended Impact (Awe & Understanding)
By learning languages, our children discover the richness and diversity of the world around them.
They gain a deep appreciation for different local, national, and international communities. Most importantly, discovering shared histories and cultural differences helps our pupils grow into kind, tolerant, and open-minded citizens of the world.
