Computing

VISION:
Computing is integral in all peoples’ lives and at Ryders Hayes we believe every pupil is a potential Computer Scientist, Games Designer and Developer, Media Producer and are mindful of E-Safety.

PRINCIPLES:

EXPLORE: Create awe and wonder about the world around us and beyond.
PLAY: Allow children to investigate their own questions with practical resources.
DEVELOP: Give opportunities for children to explain and share their ideas and findings.
LINK: Inspire and support every single child to find out more.

So that all children are:
Resourceful and engaged in purposeful play using key vocabulary and asking questions.
Resilient when things go wrong (as they do!).
Reciprocal and can share their ideas by listening and explaining.
Reflective and use their knowledge and skills to make links with other areas.

AWE:
Children grow up with an in-depth understanding of how computer technology works; understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science, including abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms and data representation; think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically; understand the components that make up digital systems, and how they communicate with one another and other systems; understand the impacts of digital technology to the individual and to wider society; apply mathematical skills relevant to Computer Science; develop important life-skills in relation to the world in which they live; and have high aspirations for their future careers. Our children are the ‘digital age’: they are the future of computing.

We aim to help children develop a confidence in and a practical working knowledge of ICT. We recognise that computing plays a pivotal role in teaching and learning throughout the primary curriculum and is a pre-requisite for educational and social progress. Mastery over computing empowers children to use ICT effectively in the society in which they live and will work, as well as allowing them engagement with the world at large. We believe the ability to use ICT is a vital life skill and a major factor in enabling children to be confident, creative and independent learners.

We aim to develop all pupils’ abilities within an integrated programme of word processing, graphics and sound manipulation, databases, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations, email, computer programming including debugging and understanding algorithms. Pupils will be given opportunities to interrelate the requirements of ICT within a broad and balanced cross-curricular approach to the teaching of ICT, with opportunities to consolidate and practise key ICT skills.

At Ryders Hayes School we strive for children to be ‘computer literate pupils’ and we aim for children to:

1. Enjoy and achieve in Computing
2. Use ICT confidently in everyday situations
3. Have a secure knowledge of ICT applications they use.
4. Have the ability to use this knowledge and understanding to carry out a range of computing tasks across the curriculum.

Here are some of the software applications that we integrate into our computing curriculum:
